Merlin is a 44ft Dean Catamaran and is now for sale.

The hull was built by the factory in Atlantis South Africa and then the interior was completed by a professional boat yard. Most of the factory suppliers were used where appropriate. The interior is paneled with red alder giving it a light homely feel.

It was launched in April 2008 and then made ready for the trip across the Altantic that started in November 2009.

It has four double cabins in each end of the boat. The two front cabins are on suite, while the back two cabins share the day central toilets.

Merlin is fitted with all the latest technology from the full Raymarine navigation equipement including the AIS (ship identification system) and autopilot to LED lighting throughout the boat. Features such as a full array of solar panels, washing machine and a watermaker make life on board a pleasure.

There is no winch at the mast and both genoa sheets, main haylard and main sheet lead back to the electric winch at the helm position. This makes short handed sailing a pleasure.

Our "Quantum fusion M Composite" sails set perfectly in all conditions. The main sail is 76 square metres, the genoa is 46 and the spinnaker is big 120.

Merlin’s strength

There have been a few comments on the web about an issue with the Dean catamarans.  This issue was caused by a new material being used in the bulkheads that seems to have not been made up correctly.

Merlin is not one of the affected boats as strong plywood was used for all the main bulkheads, as seen in this picture (behind a very young Clea).

The Dean factory is in the process of repairing the affected boats. Survey reports are available on their web site outlining the repairs done.
