Exploring above and below the water

On Tuesday, we rented a 4/4 with our Argentinean friends from Puerto Seguro to drive around Nuku Hiva. Greg was really happy to be on the wheel of a 4/4 and drive on some gravel roads. The bumpier and dustier the roads were, the bigger the kids smile was. Are we missing our African trip?!

Nuku Hiva is a beautiful islands (photos will follow when we have a good connection), with lots of pinnacles, mountains, plains, trees, bays and small villages with very friendly people. We went to a small local farm and did our weekly “shopping”, bought some fresh green veggies, some (expensive) fruits.

We also bought some monoi (the special coconut oil that is specific to French Polynesia) from an old lady we met on the way. She also gave us some dried bananas (another local specialty). We came back with all our treasures, quite exhausted from this expedition and so black from all the dust we had on the way.

Yesterday was also a great day. We sold our genoa! So to celebrate, we had another special treat: we bought some ice cream! (it was 10 times more expensive than in Cape Town) but it was SOOOO good!

Today, we went snorkeling at the entrance of the bay. Clear blue water. Greg and Victor saw 2 big rays and encountered a black pointed shark.

We are really looking forward to be in the Tuamotu to do some diving. Before heading that way (on Sunday), we are going to discover another bay where a 2h walk should lead us to the 3rd highest waterfall in the world. More soon…
